Klarna payment tech goes live in Schuh stores, Instant Buy button to be added

Buy now, pay later took a step forward this week with payment provider Klarna announcing a major expansion of its deal with the biggest footwear retailer in Britain, Schuh.

Schuh has rolled out Klarna's Pay In 3 service to its 110 UK stores

Klarna already had a deal with the company for its websites in the UK and Germany, but its new extended partnership means that the Pay in 3 option will now be available in its 110 stores across the UK.

It means Schuh is one of the first major retailers to roll out Pay in 3 across its physical store portfolio in Britain with the service having launched in time for the all-important Christmas season.

It’s another major deal for Klarna, while for Schuh, it’s another part of its omnichannel strategy that unites the tech available between its webstore and shops.

The companies said that when using it for the first time in-store, customers will have a very fast approval process with “minimal personal detail entry and a real-time decision made in just seconds”.

And the retailer will further deepen its Klarna links next year as it becomes the first UK retailer to integrate that firm’s Instant Buy button, “allowing shoppers to purchase seamlessly at any point of the purchase funnel”.

The tech can be embedded directly into product pages, or through social shopping platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. Schuh will debut the technology on its UK site basket page with a plan to roll out across social platforms later in 2020, “making the journey from inspiration to purchase smoother than ever”.

Schuh’s director of e-commerce and customer experience, Sean McKee, said the retailer has seen a 40% increase in mobile conversions and a 25% increase on desktop through Klarna since 2017.

“Those impressive growth figures can’t be ignored, and we knew we wanted to introduce Klarna more widely into our business to replicate that success across Europe,” McKee added.
